Avoid All Sugar and Carbs at Thanksiving

Completed

1

What will you do?

Only eat meat, vegetables and cheese at Thanksgiving (no carbs, sugar or alcohol) and try not to feel sorry for myself. Sugar and carbs make me miserable (foggy headed, weight gain, sluggish). Halloween was terrible, I totally binged all day and its taken weeks to recover. So I am going to think of Thanksgiving as an experiment.

2

How will you test your idea and measure success?

Plan enough alternate foods to keep myself happy (like cheese and nuts). Make a sugar free dessert for myself (hands off everyone!)

3

How will you know you are done?

Survive Thanksgiving Day.

4

How will you enjoy the journey?

Feel empowered that I can do this, and not wallow in self pity (okay maybe a little self pity).

Matthew Cornell Taking sugar and alcohol out of the traditional Thanksgiving script is admirable, and at the same time requires a shift in perspective about what is important to enjoying the holiday. For me, when I stopped drinking, I found it hard - I equated booze and having fun. Now, once I experience that little bit of sadness ("try not to feel sorry for myself") I'm able to get on with it and have fun.

Rich grist for the self-observation mill! Good experiment.

Liza Cunningham Great points about equating food/alcohol to fun. They are so often tied together. I will think about ways to enjoy the day focusing on other positives, like building a bon fire outside (which is in the plan).

Liza Cunningham Went food shopping today and bought really good cheese, cashews, and pears. Planning my new favorite sugar-free, grain-free dessert...Pears sauteed in butter with Chili Powder & Cinnamon, with Truvia and Sour Cream on top.

Matthew Cornell What you're doing, Liza, is lowering the barrier to making good choices, in this case having them available. The Path of Least Resistance talks about structuring your environment to support your direction, as does Nudge and other behavioral economics thinking.

Liza Cunningham Success! I made it through the day 99% sugar and carb free. The plan of bringing satisfying food alternatives definitely worked and gave me something to enjoy. I did have 1/4 glass of a new red wine I wanted to try, figured it was worth it.

Matthew Cornell Excellent work, Liza. I'd be curious to hear how this was received. One thing that works for you is your solid boundaries - you'll eat what you think is right regardless of what others do. I admire that.

Liza Cunningham Matt, that's a good question... its tricky because I want others to enjoy what they are doing without guilt that I am doing my thing. Overall because my family knows my wacky eating habits they are all cool with it.
