Vitamin D3 to Prevent Flu and Colds

1

What will you do?

Taking 2500 - 5k units of Vit D3 a day to see if it boosts immune system enough to ward off flu and colds this season. I read about it on the Dr. Mercola website and it seems like a logical theory.

For the next 3-4 months, take Vitamin D3 daily. At signs or exposure to flu or colds, double the dose for a day or two.

2

How will you test your idea and measure success?

If I don't get sick, or sickness is less severe than those around me.

3

How will you know you are done?

Hm, June?

4

How will you enjoy the journey?

Relax about the media craziness around flu shots and the flu.

Lizzy Son Jack had the flu last week, as did friends, cousin and sister. So far Myles and I have been fine (Myles is also Vitamin D3 same as me). Interestingly, we've been giving Jack a child appropriate dose of Vitamin D3 and his flu was much less severe than his cousin and others. So first report, this seems to be working.

Matthew Cornell Hmmm. This is a hard one to judge with such a small sample. I would feel better about the conclusion if none of you got it...

Lizzy I know, well we had only been on the D3 for a week before the flu hit. But interestingly, Jack's fever lasted only 1 day, and he was only on the couch for a day. By day 2 he was up and full of energy so it seems that the D3 lessened the severity for him. But we will continue the experiment for the winter and track future illnesses.

Matthew Cornell After all, what's the harm? It'd be awesome to have our Einstein module rub this with a few hundred TTL'ers! good experiment, Liza

Lizzy Myles got a cold this week, though he is hanging in pretty well. We're still taking 2500-5000 units vitamin D. So far I am still healthy. Curious if the severity of his cold was better because of the vitamin D. How to measure that?

Well that's a big question - and highly relevant to our third module - Einstein. The folks who do clinical trials are the experts - as is David Jensen - but the main idea is that large samples expose statistically valid results. Also, they have to be done correctly, e.g., double blind. For our work, we'll necessarily be limited by what is possible, but we'll be able to do breakthrough work (I think) just the same. We'll eventually need a solid and compelling argument.

Great question.

Lizzy Been taking Vitamin D 2500 units every day for the past month and so far no sickness. could be related but will continue to track.

Jack (son 7) said he had he sniffles this morning (forgot to give him vitamin D in weeks). So I gave him 2500 units this morning, and will do this for the next week to see if it helps ward off the cold.

Lizzy I slacked off on Vitamin D for about week, and then got a cold. I've been taking 5k-10k units of Vitamin D a day since having the cold and the intensity seems less severe. But I would need to have tracked thoroughly to be sure of any real results.
