I will replace at least one of my three daily servings of coffee (french press or espresso) with Yerba Maté. |
2 |
I will make subjective notes here as to whether I notice any difference. |
3 |
When I run out of my current stash of Yerba Maté, I will evaluate the experiment before buying any more. |

I like the flavor, and at the moment I have allergy problems or a cold, so I expect it to be enjoyable and soothing to drink regardless of the stimulant effects. |

Brock Tice So far it seems like a nice buzz. Not sure how much of that is placebo effect -- that's a huge problem with running experiments on yourself.

Brock Tice One thing I really do like is that the caffeine content is lower than coffee, so I can get sort of a continuous 'slow burn'.

Matthew Cornell When I first heard of it, I pronounced it "mate", i.e., aphrodisiac for Yerbas. Keep an eye out for any side-effects, therefore. Yes, the N=1 problem. You could do a study over time: two weeks on one, two on the other (I don't know the statistical name - anyone?). Then again, you could keep it loose. Drink on!

Brock Tice Started off with the yerba mate today rather than my traditional two shots of espresso. Too me a long time to get rolling. Perhaps I prefer the kick up front and the yerba mate to sustain it? Hard to say as I have a bit of a cold right now, so that's a confound.

Brock Tice I believe the yerba mate is making me sweat profusely.
Aug 21, 2009
Matthew Cornell "sweat profusely" = data. try stopping for a few days, see if changes?
Aug 21, 2009
Brock Tice Actually, stopping drinking it for an hour has stopped the sweating. I think I'll try another cup, then wait for it to stop, then try coffee. See if it's warm beverage or chemical effect.

Brock Tice Further observations have convinced me that the Yerba Mate is most likely making me pee and sweat a lot more than normal.
The buzz is nonetheless nice. I mix it in occasionally now.

Matthew Cornell Good results. Done with the experiment?
(pee and sweat: there must be some other activity that does the same thing, and it would be funny, but I haven't got it yet ;-)

Brock Tice Matt: Yep, I'd say this is done. I wish I could quantify it better but it's not really worth the effort to me. I certainly didn't notice any dramatic differences that would compel me to, say, drop coffee for yerba mate.
