Reserve Fridays for Biz Reading / Great Thoughts time

1

What will you do?

Reserve Friday mornings for my weekly review and general system maintenance, and Friday afternoons for business-related reading and 'great thoughts' time.

2

How will you test your idea and measure success?

I am currently really uneasy with my system, because I overloaded myself and allowed cruft to accumulate. I want to see if reserving the whole morning for weekly review AND system maintenance can get me back on top of things, and get rid of that feeling.

I also have business development reading to do that's been sitting around for almost a month. I want to finish the two books I have ASAP and start applying what I learn.

3

How will you know you are done?

Once I'm able to keep my system up with just weekly reviews again (and let's be honest, with all the stuff going on my weekly reviews slipped a lot, part of why I'm in this spot), I should feel better and be on top of things (i.e. no piles sitting around). I also need to finish these books to get the wole picture, Finishing two books is an esay marker.

4

How will you enjoy the journey?

I actually enjoy tidying, processing, organizing, and reading. Giving myself some dedicated time to do those things should be nice.

Avrum Brock - one of the ways I "capture" my week if via sketching/journaling (if you're interested in this method, check out anything by Danny Gregory - http://www.dannygregory.com/

I do a quick sketch, and jot down reflections about the week. Then I review my 1 big GOAL & 1 HABIT I'm cultivating. I then jot down some quick ideas of how I'd like to handle these things in the coming week.

I find this approach provides a measure of depth that Covey, GTD did not. Alas, I'm an artist/musician first, an entrepreneur second. So a creative weekly review works for me.

Also, my weekly review is so much more enjoyable when done in my favorite coffee shop(s) - in vancouver (Blenz), in Toronto (Scratch Espresso or Dark Horse).

Brock Tice Thanks for the tips -- I usually keep a work log in Google Notebook. I've been bad about that lately. I'd like to do my weekly review elsewhere, but it includes so much pulling of papers/notes around the house that I'm afraid I can't get away. Maybe I'd benefit from separating out that part of the review.

Finally, assuming that address is correct, it appears someone has hacked his site. :(

Brock Tice Oh interesting, the spam stuff only appears if I view the site without javascript on.

Matthew Cornell Brock: I'm looking forward to hearing your results, esp. the feelings you have of being in control (or not!)
Avrum: I love the idea of sketching, BTW. Gregory's drawings are pleasing.

Brock Tice Ugh, I am still fighting backlog. This is a good motivation for me to work it down, and I'm making great progress. Here's hoping I can do it next week.

On the plus side, I've been doing biz reading with Kindle on my Nexus One whenever I eat lunch by myself, or am waiting in line, so at least I'm getting some in.

Brock Tice On the plus side, I finally worked all the way through a weekly review for the first time in as long as I can remember today! I kept at it even with distractions. I.E. while waiting for a large tarball to extract, I processed my paper Inbox.

Brock Tice Last Friday was a fail. I blame my lack of discipline and a new laptop to play with. :) I'm keeping in mind that Fridays need to be reserved as I do my weekly and daily plans, and that's helping some, but it's a gradual process.

Matthew Cornell Are you actually blocking out time in your calendar? It's a standard time management technique, but maybe it would help? Of course you have to treat that appointment with yourself as sacred as any other appointment. Which means no shiny laptops :-O

Brock Tice This has not been working well, and I think it's because there's just way too much that I've committed to. I'm slowly getting better as I renegotiate and clean up. Come Friday I always have way too much to get done, and I can't spare the time.

Brock Tice This is one of those changes that I try to shoehorn in. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I'm deciding that this time it didn't work.
