My desperate attempt not to get more cavities in my teeth

1

What will you do?

Per several regular trips to the dentist, I seem to have some weak spots on my teeth, probably from hardly ever flossing when I had braces. Somehow they are lately causing me problems. I'm using (at my dentist's recommendation):

Chlorohexidine rinse to brush, twice a week, and

Prescription-strength super-fluoridated toothpaste every night, no rinsing afterward.

Regular toothpaste in the mornings.

2

How will you test your idea and measure success?

If my x-rays show improvement, and I have no new cavities at my next dental visit, that will certainly be a success.

3

How will you know you are done?

I need to probably give this up to a year, since I can't judge the incidence of cavities well without that.

4

How will you enjoy the journey?

I felt helpless for a while when going into the dentist. I brush and floss regularly, but I was still getting cavities that required drilling. This too may fail, but for now I feel like I'm doing something to 'fight back', which is a good feeling.

Matthew Cornell Excellent experiment, Brock. Good luck. Re: feeling helpless, I totally get it. Taking action and working with experts is a real stress-reliever. "I can do it all on my own" is a TTL barrier. Question: How often do you get cleanings? I upped my frequency from 6 months to every 3. Maybe you can get data sooner than 1 year.

Brock Tice My cleanings are every six months. I'll have to check the insurance parameters and the costs and see about every three months. So far I'm keeping up the regimen.

Matthew Cornell Stick with it, Brock. BTW, have you seen an impact on your feeling helpless?

Brock Tice I've got an appointment mid-November, we'll see how it comes out then. I've been sticking to the plan pretty well.

Brock Tice Good and bad news from my last appointment. Good news: no new cavities. Bad news: gums are looking less good (this hasn't been an issue for me for a long time -- new regimen a cause? hmm). They gave me a fluoride varnish and recommended an electric toothbrush. Found a basic sonicare model on Amazon for less than $50, got here today.

Per Matt's suggestion I scheduled a quick follow-up appointment in 3 months instead of six to see how the new strategy is working and get feedback sooner.

Matthew Cornell A mixed bag, Brock. Interesting. I took up a new perio routine that's helped gum health alot: http://edison.thinktrylearn.com/experiments/show/149

instructions: http://tinyurl.com/3xw7q5v
brushes mentioned: http://tinyurl.com/2vmlyvs

The electric brush is crucial to gentle cleaning. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Brock Tice I've been using your perio routine, more or less, since you posted that. We'll see how it goes in another two months or so.
