Increase Iron and Ferritin

1

What will you do?

Try a new brand of iron supplement in order to increase my iron and ferritin levels which are very low (common with hypothyroid). In the past few months I've noticed my hair seems more fine, and losing more noticeably which I read is likely related to low iron. Also hoping it will help continue to improve energy and minimize energy drops.

2

How will you test your idea and measure success?

Observe how many times I need to wrap an elastic around a pony tail. Starting now at 4 times, hoping to get to three or even 2, but that seems unrealistic.

3

How will you know you are done?

It takes a long time, like 3-4 months to get iron and ferritin up, so this is on-going through the fall.

4

How will you enjoy the journey?

Process of elimination will hopefully get my closer to solving this. Knowing I am doing something feels good.

Matthew Cornell Neat experiment, and a clever test. Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Brock Tice Hope it doesn't back you up! We accidentally gave too many vitamins to my daughter one day and wow... Whoops, TMI.

Lizzy Lol, yes for that reason, I was very careful to find a good iron supplement, recommended by the ladies on the thyroid forum. I definitely would not be sharing that kind of data ;-)

Iron also makes me nauseous so I have to be really careful about what supplement I take, seems common though.

Lizzy Still consistently taking the iron and ferritin. But I am running too many supplement experiments to know which are making a difference. In general my energy seems good, so that at least tells me to keep doing what I am doing.

Matthew Cornell Yes, with health it's easy to continue increasing the number of variables. It's tough to do good science when results are slow or mixed, as it seemingly always is with the body.

Lizzy I read on the Yahoo Hair Growth forum that Iron levels (lab work) needs to be at 70-90 for hair regrowth. So having low iron is a big factor for me related to hair issues. My iron has always been low. And it takes months of solid iron supplementation to increase iron in the body. Will get lab work soon to see if iron supplementation these past few months is helping.

Matthew Cornell Make sure they use a rusty nail to draw the blood. That way you get your results *plus* a little iron boost.

Lizzy It's been ages since I updated this experiment. But hair growth is a slow process. I will get my lab results next week, but since July I have diligently been taking iron supplements. It takes month of iron supplementation to actually get the levels up. I am happy to say that my hair is coming in fuller now, which is super exciting. I think the omega-6s are helping too. Though running these experiments together makes it hard to measure which is working. It was worth doing them together simply because the hair growth takes so long. In 3 months I hope to report that my hair is healthy and full at shoulder length.
