Learn phrases to use as a tourist in Thailand.

By being able to order a beer, ask for the price (and understand the answer) etc while I am there. |
3 |
If I know about 50 phrases which I can pronounce (kind of) and know when to use. |

This will be an experiment in learning a new language as well as learning how to learn. The idea is to try to use some new mnemonictechniques on the way... |

Matthew Cornell Sounds great! Any specific plans for a trip? I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes, esp. using on-line techniques.

Fredrik We are going to backpack in Thailand for three weeks where we will have some ideas on places to go to but mainly let the trip takes us where it wants.
I have found out there is plenty of free sites to learn a new language but for Thai I found http://www.thai-language.com. It provides both words, sentences and grammar presented as text and with soundclips to give the actual pronunciation. So now I have put together 50 flashcards both in paperform (to use when out and about) as well as on the computer. On the computer I used the free software Anki (ichi2.net/anki/) which supports sounds and images.

Matthew Cornell Super cool. From the site: 21146 audio clips, over 46813 dictionary entries, 823 images and illustrations. Incredible work. Active forum, too.

Fredrik To memorize phrases I have found that the best way is to sound them out and think of other things they sound like. For example the greeting "sawat di khrap" sounds a bit like "say what... crap". Also to learn there still takes time and effort but by using the flashcards I am extra productive on my bathroombreaks at work.

Fredrik By memorizing the words based on how I think they would be pronounced and then learn the exact pronounciation speeds things up a bit.

Matthew Cornell Good to know this idea works for you, Fredrik. I wonder if your result is generally true for adult language learners.

Fredrik Back after the vacation I could I went a bit overboard when learning phrases to use. In the end I maybe used ten of them in three weeks as English still is the universal language. Had a great trip anyway and a fun experience in learning where I learned some techniques to speed it up.
