give nine year old daughter unlimited TV time for 1/2 day

1

What will you do?

I will give my daughter permission to watch as much TV as she wants for the next five hours. Note: I'll still limit *what* she watches, but instead of our usual one hour limit (that's on weekends; 1/2 hour on weekdays) I'll leave it open.

2

How will you test your idea and measure success?

I'll measure informally how much time she actually spends when it's up to her. Success is simply trying it.

3

How will you know you are done?

see above

4

How will you enjoy the journey?

o Being curious what she does. Will she watch the entire time? Will she get lonely? Will she stop to eat or use the bathroom.
o Watching my own bias in action.
o Learning from this.

Matthew Cornell You should have seen the look on her face when I announced the experiment. "Really?" Per professional advice, I continue to look for ways to keep her off-balance once in a while. ;-)

Matthew Cornell Well, she watched most of the free time, which I somewhat expected. I did note that she wanted to cuddle that night. I point this out because I wondered whether she might feel lonely after screen time. But I think it was more her missing her mom, who's still out of town. Overall, not sure what I learned, but I'm still glad I shook her up a little.
