try daily Vitamin C + Bioflavinoids dose for afternoon mood crash

1

What will you do?

Continuing my experiments to improve my mood disorder [1], I'll take at 1pm daily 1000 mg of Vitamin C, and 500 mg bioflavonoid. There

2

How will you test your idea and measure success?

I'll subjectively monitor the 2-3p mood crash I've been experiencing lately.

3

How will you know you are done?

I'll give it two weeks (i.e., ending Fri 3/26).

4

How will you enjoy the journey?

Be curious about what I notice, if anything. Enjoy improved eyesight and skin appearance ;-) [1]

Matthew Cornell Afternoon went well. As with all Edison experiments, until we put Einstein into place, measurements are limited by sample size. Still!

Matthew Cornell A nice side-benefit to the list of my experiments in Edison is the reminder value. While reviewing them, I realized it's time to take these. (There are better ways to be reminded, but this worked :-)

Matthew Cornell Yesterday was pretty rough, mood-wise. It's unreasonable to expect this experiment to help in a big way (it's like putting a band-aid on a concussion), but not encouraging. But I'll give it time.

Matthew Cornell No noticeable difference so far. Will continue experiment.

Matthew Cornell I'm continuing this, but it's in that Think, Try, Learn experimental category of observations that need to be a more objective. In this case, I'd need a mood chart. There are various tools for this (Brock knows a lot about them), but frankly I don't feel like taking the responsibility on right now. However, this makes proceeding unclear. Taking these pills /might/ be helping, but, as my RN wife points out, everything has side-effects. Plus, it's irrational behavior. It's been two weeks, so I'll try adjusting the experiment by STOPPING taking these for two weeks and seeing if I notice a difference in my mood in the afternoon. Fun!

Lizzy Cool Matt, its good to compare taking the vitamins vs. not taking them. Sometimes the absence makes the presence more obvious. Or shows they weren't making a difference. All great data.

Matthew Cornell As you know, I track GreatQuote's in my big arse text file [1], and you're the source of more than a few. This one, "Sometimes the absence makes the presence more obvious," is a beaut!

Matthew Cornell I've decided I need some data, so as a sub-experiment I'll track mood in the afternoons for the next two weeks. [Technology note: I looked for a good iPhone app, but pickings were surprisingly slim. I ended up using Evernote with a message convention of A, S, or D in the subject, low mood to high, or, "bad, OK, and great." I used those letters to hopefully make easier entering them on the phone.]

Matthew Cornell rough weekend, mood-wise, but I was solo-parenting, which is stressful for me. so not a good sample re: this experiment. curious to see how the week goes..

Matthew Cornell Still not sure being off these two pills is making a difference. Mood is fluctuating about the same, I think. Another week, then we'll see. Maybe I'll start taking them again while continuing to measure. This will give me a better comparison.

Matthew Cornell I decided to start this up again, even though it's been 11 days, not 14. I want to see if it improves my mood in the next four days before Monday's medical procedure (http://edison.thinktrylearn.com/experiments/show/139). That's not much time, but I'm curious.

Matthew Cornell Just for kicks I plotted the mood data I've collected. It's at http://www.flickr.com/photos/matthewcornell/4524599888/ and is inconclusive. I'd need more careful tracking over longer time to find patterns, I think. For example, why is it so good around 4/2? (Actually, that was an excellent few days consulting :-) If I divine data from the tea leaves, it looks like I had no more "1" days after starting back up. Conclusion: Possible continued value - needs more study.

Matthew Cornell I'll call this one "doesn't seem to help."
