Try the "It isn't cancer" mind hack

1

What will you do?

To counter persistent negative thinking and fears around up-coming surgeries, I'll try a mind hack I came up with. When the "brain rats" infect me, I'll immediately say to myself "It isn't cancer," which is true: they are not cancer.

2

How will you test your idea and measure success?

Will the frequency and severity of thoughts change?

3

How will you know you are done?

I'll try it for a week or so, then evaluate.

4

How will you enjoy the journey?

Feel good about trying something to help me be more at peace, i.e., taking action. Trying out a new mindhack that might be useful to others. Maybe blog about it.

Matthew Cornell An iPhone "clicker" app would be helpful with this - click it each time I have the thought. Would it help to have two clickers - one when I experience the thought, then a second when I apply the hack? Seems questionable...

Avrum There's a CBT app which may work for you. Search for CBT on iTunes.

Avrum Matt - though I'm trained in CBT, I'm not a huge fan (just had to throw that in). However, I'd go with the app that:

a) is designed by a therapist
b) is one that is aesthetically pleasing

Matthew Cornell Thanks, Avrum. I'll give it a shot. I'm curious to see how much work they are to use. I have a *lot* of stuff running through my head!

Matthew Cornell I think I'm done with this. Results: So-so. This falls into a much broader and more complex category, but it was a nice idea. May activate it in the future.
