gum surgery part 2/2

Overview I'll get the second half of my gum surgery on 12/12/011. The experiment for part one was: Edison - get gum surgery using Alloderm: http://edison.thinktrylearn.com/experiments/show/139
. I will track my recovery, including discomfort and ability to w... See experiment

Matthew Cornell Recovery going very well, and the two week exam was positive. However, following my perio's orders re: mountain biking (strenuous exercise) I waited the time he recommended (which made it this last Monday), and did an hour ride. Felt great during it, but the next day noticed some mild throbbing. I think I may have set back the recovery a little, but it's probably OK. Wi... See more

Matthew Cornell Ok, an update. It's been about seven weeks, and the recovery is more complex than last time. First, the lower portion's 'flap' came loose and dropped down. (An aside: Something you don't want your perio to say when he looks in your mouth is 'interesting.') Because of my anxiety, when I noticed some blood spotting a 4 weeks ago I decided to try to ignore it and wait two ... See more

attract and keep new Edison users

Created by Matthew Cornell Mar 23, 2011 | Category Work

Overview Now that 2.0 is out I have all the features I need to demonstrate what people can do with Edison. Now all I need is more users, in addition to the wonderful ones who use it now :-) I'd welcome any of your advice! See experiment

Stacey Summitt Mann Absolutley LOVE this site...keep working on the improvements! It was exactly what I needed at the right time, and oddly enough..I found it searching google while trying to come up with my own idea for a blog. One section in terms of marketing--have you thought about getting this into the classroom? I teach high school and see many applications here--from psychology clas... See more

Matthew Cornell Thanks so much, Stacey. Sounds like you get the idea behind this. I like your classroom idea. If you have some thoughts on next steps, feel free to run them past me ( http://www.matthewcornell.org/contact/ ). Right now I'm focusing on the money-earning side of my life, but self-experimentation and my Think, Try, Learn philosophy are still percolating.

get gum surgery using Alloderm Completed

Created by Matthew Cornell Mar 18, 2010 | Category Health/Medicine

Overview I have gum recession that resulted (-ing) from bone loss from bruxism/grinding and other factors. Tissue grafts are apparently the way to go, and I had one done some years ago. It used the "harvest tissue from the palate" method, which was one of the most uncomfortable things I've gone through, worse psychologi... See experiment

Matthew Cornell Update: I had an evaluation by the periodontist, and the attachment numbers were clearly improved compared to pre-surgery. Also, they're a lot better than the other (non-done) side. I'll definitely be getting the second half done, maybe this fall. Good news, though: He said the Prednisone is not necessary, which will help make it go smoother, I think.

plant raspberry bushes

Created by Matthew Cornell Aug 01, 2010 | Category Home/Garden

Thumb

Overview I'll plant 10 raspberry bushes next to my fence, which gets great sun. The only variables I'll set up are how much sun each gets (on the end there's less than at the start) and how big the holes I dig are. Later I can do experiments in pruning, fertilizer, nets, etc. I'll use the varieties that that local garden center h... See experiment

Comment

Matthew Cornell A long overdue update: For the last month or two the bushes on the whole have been producing a handful of berries each day. Though I'd like for the harvest to be greater, picking and eating them it the highlight of each day. Hugely satisfying :-) A surprise from this long-running experiment is that each bush is producing far different amounts compared to the others. Als... See more

Matthew Cornell Not sure exactly what to prune now that it's late fall, so I'll prune back almost everything, except for a few canes that still have green leaves, but did not bear fruit. My question: Which canes will bear fruit next season. I should probably learn more, but - itself an experiment - I will be a little sloppy in this one thing. ;-)

organize a local men's nonfiction book club

Created by Matthew Cornell Mar 21, 2011 | Category Hobbies/Recreation

Overview I need to socialize more, and read more too, so I will invite a handful of acquaintances to join a local men's nonfiction book club that I'm interested in creating. If I get enough interest, I'll run a few of them to see how they go, then decide from there whether to continue. See experiment

Mark Ayers On the topic of experiments. There should be a way to activate/deactivate experiments. And a way to highlight experiments as good examples. Coming in fresh I think useful examples of great experiments could help folks integrate the experience. Perhaps email reminders ala 750words.com or health month.com by Buster.

Matthew Cornell Hi Mark - great to have you here. Re: book club, I'm ready to restart it and arrange the second meeting, now that my new job (yay) has settled in a bit. I ran fortuitously into one of the members, which makes a good reminder.

Re: Edison feature suggestions, thanks very much - they're good ones. Right now development is on hold while I reassess. As an experime... See more

bottle good feelings

Group Experiment

Created by Matthew Cornell Mar 06, 2011 | Category Spiritual

Thumb

Overview What can we do to save up good things that happen to us when we need them on emotionally rainy days? A gratitude journal is a traditional approach, but in this experiment we try something simpler and more immediate - "bottling" the feeling for later. See experiment

Comment

The1 I too maintain a gratitude Journal. I believe it really helps. BTW thanks for making this website, I just joined today and I am loving it. :)

Matthew Cornell Just a quick welcome to the Brussels Quantified folks ( http://www.meetup.com/Quantified-Self-Show-Tell-Brussels/events/15876800/ ). You can use this group experiment as a sandbox to play with Join, observations, and data.

Simon B. The button [ > Data ] looked like a Play-button. Maybe it could be a checkbox, someting like '[ ] Add data' ? I originally thought I would add data on the screen where the data table is.

create a conference poster in two days

Created by Matthew Cornell May 24, 2011 | Category Work

Thumb

Overview I will create a 3' x 4' poster for http://www.quantifiedself.com/conference/ , which starts this weekend. The deadline is tomorrow, and I started yesterday, so I've time-constrained it. The format is a dozen of us in a room where attendees can stop by and talk. See experiment

Comment

Matthew Cornell Tomorrow's the first day of the conference, and the posters. Mine looks good, and I've practiced, so now it's show time. To manage being scared, I'm working on thinking of it objectively - scientifically, starting with curiosity about how it will go (see the questions in the details).

Lizzy Root canal, gee, that sounds terrible! Yes you guessed right, stress will cause cold sore flare ups for sure. In fact, dental work is considered a major stressor in people's lives. So that makes sense. Vitamin C dosing I believe helps with the cold sore and stress (especially upcoming stress). Dr Wilson wrote all about it. High doses, like 1000mg a day with (500 mg biof... Does Dehydration Contribute to Grumpy Mornings

Peer Experiment
