Use Elance for a Commercial Programming Project Completed

Created by Brock Tice Mar 04, 2010 | Category Other

Thumb

Overview I have some programming projects on the back burner (i.e. Someday) that could yield commercial success if I ever had a chance to implement them. First among those is an Android app for doctors suggested by my wife. I'm going to try to get it done via Elance. See experiment

Matthew Cornell Re: policy, I came across this too. We had to get Freelancer staff involved to change his original bid to the agreed-upon amount. It wasn't satisfying, but I felt I needed to pay something. I ended up leaving a frank summary and review for future people thinking about hiring him.

Jonathan Maddison Great experiment Brock! I've been considering outsourcing some development projects, but I'm not sure about the calibre of offshore developers.

Your experiment is (kind of) encouraging. At least it seems there are some capable developers, even if they are somewhat lacking motivation.

Use Dance Dance Revolution for Exercise

Created by Brock Tice Dec 31, 2010 | Category Fitness/Exercise/Sports

Thumb

Overview Play Dance Dance Revolution for at least 1/2 hour per day, 5 days / week, for one month. See experiment

Brock Tice We don't have two pads, but we take turns. We hit some bumps when upgrading to a new TV because it added some lag, but we finally have that sorted out, so we're trying again this wek.

Matthew Cornell You might find interesting this experiment example from a paper I report on: "Exercise three mornings a week with spouse." - http://quantifiedself.com/2011/01/how-to-experiment-guidelines-from-stewart-friedmans-be-a-better-leader-have-a-richer-life/

Invest in an individual stock

Created by Brock Tice Jan 20, 2011 | Category Money/Finances

Thumb

Overview Invest $1000 in a particular company that I suspect may do well. See experiment

Comment

Brock Tice I should probably be monitoring emotional involvement and distraction. I'm now watching the ticker all the time to see how it's doing. I would prefer not to do that.

Matthew Cornell Interesting, Brock. I've just noticed something similar with my mood tracking experiment. After a while I realized that I need to be tracking different dimensions, not just one overall measure. I should split out anxiety, depression, and irritability/agitation. But it's a lot of additional work, so we'll see.

My desperate attempt not to get more cavities in my teeth

Created by Brock Tice Jul 21, 2010 | Category Other

Thumb

Overview Per several regular trips to the dentist, I seem to have some weak spots on my teeth, probably from hardly ever flossing when I had braces. Somehow they are lately causing me problems. I'm using (at my dentist's recommendation):

Chlorohexidine rinse to brush, twice a week, and

Prescription-strength ... See experiment

Comment

Brock Tice I've been using your perio routine, more or less, since you posted that. We'll see how it goes in another two months or so.

Back to Basics - Get rid of stuff

Created by Brock Tice Oct 20, 2010 | Category Other

Thumb

Overview I am going to try to use "forget it/give it away/discard it/torch it" as my default response to almost everything. I have too much crap, too many inputs, and too many commitments. See experiment

Comment

Brock Tice Haven't really had a chance to get rid of much yet, too much going on. Remains something I want to do.

Reserve Fridays for Biz Reading / Great Thoughts time Completed

Created by Brock Tice Jul 22, 2010 | Category Other

Thumb

Overview Reserve Friday mornings for my weekly review and general system maintenance, and Friday afternoons for business-related reading and 'great thoughts' time. See experiment

Comment

Brock Tice This has not been working well, and I think it's because there's just way too much that I've committed to. I'm slowly getting better as I renegotiate and clean up. Come Friday I always have way too much to get done, and I can't spare the time.

Brock Tice This is one of those changes that I try to shoehorn in. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I'm deciding that this time it didn't work.

Have magnet implanted in finger Completed

Created by Brock Tice May 03, 2010 | Category Other

Overview Have a magnet implanted in my finger, like this guy: http://feelingwaves.blogspot.com/ so that I can feel electromagnetic fields. See experiment

Matthew Cornell FYI Your experiment got mentioned in a comment here: http://www.matthewcornell.org/blog/2010/10/24/whats-a-good-experimental-design-to-test-oil-pulling.html . I put that post up to have an appropriate place for the discussion of the benefits of oil pulli... See more

Brock Tice I do have an update, that water cooling setup I posted includes a magnetically-driven pump. When I first turned it on I was holding it in my left hand, and immediately got a very strong, interesting, but not unpleasant sensation from the magnet. I enjoyed playing with it for a little while to see where the field was and how it felt.

Matthew Cornell Congratulations on your experiment, Brock. Thanks for sharing! I'll enter the "suspend/resume" request into the database.

Comment

Matthew Cornell > Suspending this for now (need an option to suspend!).

We just added the simplest implementation of this, based on your request, Brock. You can now edit an experiment's run state ("Running" and "Completed"). No more "Are you sure?" popup when you complete an experiment, too. Enjoy!

Record personal informatics with your.flowingdata Completed

Created by Brock Tice Jun 22, 2010 | Category Other

Thumb

Overview Use your.flowingdata with Twitter to record daily events. The point is to get a personal informatics habit going. Once it's established, I'd like to go on alternating baseline periods with experimental periods. This will give me real data on how my experiments are affecting my life. See experiment

Comment

Brock Tice I'm actually giving up on this. Way too much overhead. I have to stop in the middle of what I'm doing and update. Would probably work better without a constantly-moving toddler to attend to.

Brock Tice I should say though, I really like YFD.

Try having a VA monitor and filter my email Completed

Created by Brock Tice May 24, 2010 | Category Other

Thumb

Overview Hire one or two VAs and have them check my email twice a day. I'll provide a list of rules, and have them (a) notify me immediately of urgent things by phone (b) take care of everything they can via my rules and their judgement and (c) call me at the end of the day with a list of things that ultimately need my attention.... See experiment

Comment

Brock Tice Having my VA handling my email has enabled me to tackle what really matters in my work and not stress about many things that don't. I'm marking this one completed, and I'm also calling it a success.

Jun 22, 2010

Comment

Matthew Cornell Good work! I'm sure others who are thinking about a VA will find this helpful, Brock.
