take 1000 mg EPA fish oil/day for mood stabilization

Created by Matthew Cornell 28 days ago | Category Health/Medicine

Thumb

Overview Per my psychiatrist's recommendation I'll take 1000 mg EPA fish oil/day to help stabilize my mood, which is off due to bipolar type II mood disorder. Since one tablet typically contains less than 1000mg of EPA, I'll take enough to make it up, in this case, 6 (!) tablets per evening (180 mg EPA/tablet). Yuck! See experiment

Comment

Matthew Cornell I gotta' say, the last three days I've felt uncharacteristically depressed - melancholy. I'm operating on ignorance here, but I wonder if 1) the fish oil could have taken effect, and 2) it could be causing the depression. I'll go off it for a week, starting tomorrow morning, to see what happens. Not good science, but hey - better than none!

Intermittent Fasting Completed

Created by Johan Nov 28, 2011 | Category Diet

Thumb

Overview I will try intermittent fasting (IF) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intermittent_fasting)

I will try IF for fat loss purposes.
I will make two days a week my "fast day" for 1 month. These days will vary.

1 month isn't very... See experiment

Comment

Johan I have been struggling real hard with fasting in the last couple of months. I haven't been fasting consistently and when I have, I haven't always been fasting for 24 hours straight but have broken the fast earlier.
That's why I think I'll take a break from this experiment. Maybe I'll make a similar one when I feel like testing fasting again.
This one is "completed"!

Matthew Cornell I've been running this experiment for a few weeks, so I'll catch you up.

Past:
o Eye exam: My depth perception is very good. My doctor thinks it's an orientation problem. Suggests trying contacts, and dry eye drops, which I've added to the original list above. Good news!
o Canopy colors: I followed advice at Helifreak (450 orientation problems retur... See more

Matthew Cornell OK, what worked great was repainting the canopy dayglo green on top and orange on the bottom, plus orange on the tail. That and not focusing on the landing skids made a huge difference. It's still scary, though, but I think that's just part of the deal. Really loving the hobby. Closing the experiment.

Matthew Cornell He still says it will be fine. The upper left is a little soft yet, so I have to hold off on the electric brush, but I'm hopeful. I'll be glad when it's over. It is an expensive and uncomfortable procedure, but I'm grateful to have been able to get it done.

Comment

Matthew Cornell Recovery not 100%, but no problems except for a *tiny* bit of blood sometimes when I do my nightly routine. I have an appointment in two weeks and will ask about it. In general the area feels OK, but not completely normal yet like the other side.

Daily Goal

Created by Courtney Williams Dec 10, 2011 | Category Other

Thumb

Overview I will start every day by writing what I need to do. I will choose one goal and focus on that. If I complete it I can more. See experiment

Matthew Cornell Any news? Experiment still active?

Mar 31, 2012

Comment

Courtney Williams Not really active - I think there are better ways to organise such a goal that aren't especially quantifiable. I also think it's hard to put an exact number on a goal until after you've done it!

Matthew Cornell For others, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaternion . Very cool. Welcome.

Sam Final observation: The solution to this is using dual-quaternions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_quaternion) which is straight forward if one gets the normal quaternions :)

One week with focus on kindness and giving Completed

Created by Fredrik Nov 11, 2011 | Category Spiritual

Thumb

Overview During this week I will focus on finding acts of kindness and giving to see what it gives me mentally. See experiment

Comment

Fredrik This was fun and didn't require much effort from me. What I learnt was keeping more notice on other people to find situations to help out.

Jan 03, 2012

Comment

Matthew Cornell Well done, Fredrik. Thanks for sharing it with us. I need to do more of this - good modeling. Re 'keeping an eye open for nice little things to do for others', I had a chance to do exactly that. We have a friend that my wife hikes with, and the friend is unstable while walking. She's fallen a few times, but still wants to get out. A few weeks ago I saw a hiker while I w... See more

Matthew Cornell I'm curious how this is going. It's a classic time management technique, based on the 80-20 principle, if I'm not mistaken.
